On Monday, December 7th and Friday, December 11th, approximately 80 second grade students from Laurel Hill Elementary got an opportunity to experience culinary arts. The students have been reading Hedgehog Bakes a Cake, which focuses on literacy skills, different genres, following directions like a recipe and sequence, while emphasizing 21st century learning skills and how it relates to everyday food preparation. As a tie in to this lesson, students had the opportunity to experience a “live lesson” on baking cakes under the guidance of Chef Dibble and Chef Richardson. This was a great career exploration opportunity for the students to illustrate how the content that they are learning is applicable in a real-world setting. The students spoke of what a great time they had and how much they enjoyed this experience.
